Arkansas has nearly 100,000 miles of public roads. This network is comprised of state highways, country roads, city streets and the bridges that connect them.
Arkansas has the 12th largest state highway system in the country, even though our small population ranks only 32nd nationally. With 16,443 miles, the state highway system makes up 16% of our public roadways, but carries 76% of all the traffic.
County roads throughout Arkansas's 75 counties comprise 69% of all public roads (68,811 miles). Because they are mostly rural in nature, county roads only handle 9% of the load.
Your street is part of a city street network that includes 14,778 miles, or 15% of the system. City streets are responsible for 15% of our state's annual traffic.
